Institute was established in 1959 at the Werahera workshops of the Ceylon Transport Board as a result of an agreement between Federal Republic of Germany and Sri Lanka. The Institute was shifted to Moratuwa in 1974 and It was managed by a German director and his staff till 1976. Then its management was transferred to Sri Lankan Director and under the Ministry of Transport till 2004. In 2004 institute's management was transferred to Ministry of Skills Development Vocational and Technical Education. From November 2005 CGTTI was handed over to the Ministry of Skills Development and Public Enterprise Reforms.
CGTTIOBA NSW participated various community activities Every year. We are taking part of jointly organised Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Sydney every year since 2003. We were part of the food supply program to the Dikwella North Maha Vidyalaya in Matara from the time that was re-built after deadly Tsunami struck in the Southeast Asia, CGTTIOBANSW is a key player in fund raising activities in Sydney within Sri Lankan comunity. CGTTIOBANSW was a major player during the fund raising activities for the Black Saturday Bush fire victims.
